Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace James Metts and Precinct 4 Constable Kenneth “Rowdy” Hayden just wrapped up another successful school supply drive to benefit elementary school children throughout East Montgomery County whose families’ can’t afford the basic requirements.

As always, East County residents and businesses were generous and have provided dozens upon dozens of full sets of supplies, including everything from backpacks to pencils.

Judge Metts said children should be excited about the start of school, and not worried about feeling embarrassed because their families are less fortunate than others.

“Unfortunately, we have many families that are struggling, for a variety of reasons including the economy, illness and single parent households,” Judge Metts said. “We also have situations where grandparents who are on Social Security are raising children, or parents with disabilities who receive only a small check have children. Regardless of the situation, every child deserves the tools to make the most of their opportunity for a better future.”

Constable Hayden agreed with Judge Metts.

“In law enforcement, we often see these children living in situations where they family barely has enough to pay for food and shelter, and buying school supplies can be difficult if not impossible,” Constable Hayden said. “I believe by helping give them what they need to succeed, we’re showing them someone cares and hopefully helping to point them in the right direction and break the cycle of poverty.”

The supplies will soon be delivered to area schools.

Judge Metts and Constable Hayden are grateful to everyone who contributed, including Porter Walmart; Atascocita Walmart; Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey of Kingwood; Mr. and Mrs. Weldon of Porter; Mr. and Mrs. Seales of Cleveland; Mr. and Mrs. Atkme of Porter; Ms. Ellen Whitener; Otts Fabrication; Mr. and Mrs. David Miller of Porter; Mr. and Mrs. Barnhill; Sammy Taylor Memorial Fund; Dale Walker with Forest Retreat RV Park; Dean Rogers; Sara Hudspeth; Ed Kirland; Linda Ott; Mr. and Mrs. Therlyn Cook.
