Peace, love, healing and justice are just a few of many words that will be echoed in remembrance of Jazmine Barnes. The Student Services division at Lone Star College-Kingwood invites the community to attend a memorial balloon release Jan. 22 at 12:30 p.m.

The event will take place in the Big Quad, located between the Student Conference Center and the Administration and Performing Arts Center. Jazmine was tragically shot and killed Dec. 30.

"Our goal is to say and do something to demonstrate our support for this family and our united stance against violence in our community or anywhere else," said Dr. Darrin Rankin, vice president of student services and chief student affairs officer. 'As educators, this event will allow us to fulfill our great responsibility of enlightening and teaching others."

During the event, guest speakers will discuss this tragedy, read statistics on the number of children who have died due to gun violence, and offer possible solutions to help curtail the violence and heal the community. Afterward, participants will have a chance to write on and release nearly 75 pink, purple and blue balloons.

"Before the balloon release, there will be a moment of silence to reflect on the hundreds of lives lost due to violence," Rankin said. "We hope that attendees leave with a sense of duty and a resolve to make their communities a safer place for all of us to live."
